FDA to get tough on unregistered products

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned of punitive action against unregistered sachet and bottled water producers.

Mr Vigil Edward Prah-Ashun, Ashanti Regional Head, said the producers should either get right with the law by registering their products with the Authority or face prosecution.

He expressed worry about the increasing rate at which mineral water companies are springing up and operating with no regard to the law.

He told Ghana News Agency in an interview that such impunity would not be allowed and that consumables, without certified quality and safety, would be removed from the market.

He said it is important for everybody to recognise that “non registration of products is a criminal offence, punishable by law”.

Mr Prah-Ashun said since water is vital to the human system and could easily be contaminated and become unwholesome it is important for the product to be taken through scientific examination to assure of its safety.

The FDA would have to inspect and ascertain whether the production processes conform to best practices and meets required standards.

Mr Prah-Ashun advised consumers to look out for the “FDB” inscription or the logo of the Ghana Standard Board on sachet and bottled water before patronising the products.
