Bawku Nursing Training College lack accommodation

The Presbyterian Nursing Training College at Bawku is confronted with serious accommodation challenges which have become a source of worry to students and authorities of the college.

The college since its inception has only two student hostels for male and female students able to accommodate less than two hundred students.

Teaching and learning facilities including lecture halls, resource library and logistics are also missing in the college that is expected to train health workers to man the various health facilities.

It has no adequate transportation for the rendering of routine services and for supervision of students who go on field work.

Mr. Emmanuel Abelko, Principal of the College disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Bawku.

Mr. Abelko said the state of student accommodation in the school was bad and that it had reduced the present level of academic performance as compared to previous years.

He said the college had a student population of 277 with only two hostels and this has made the college unable to admit more students.

Mr. Abelko said1000 applications were received at the beginning of the last academic year, adding that 800 applicants qualified, but only 100 were admitted as a result of the lack of accommodation.

Mr. Abelko said the college awards a Registered General Nursing Diploma (RGND) and affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and that there would be the need for it to be upgraded.

The Principal called on stakeholders to see themselves as part of the process of proving the college with the needed infrastructure to facilitate teaching and learning.
