Asante-Mampong records 11deaths from road crashes in 2012

The Asante Mampong Police has recorded a total of 71 road accident cases with 11 deaths in 2012.

Superintendent (Sup) Benjamin Kwadwo Gyasi, Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Commander, who made this known, said 21 persons were severely injured in the accidents while 39 had minor injuries.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Asante Mampong, Sup. Gyasi said a total of 9 persons were also knocked down last year.

He said a total amount of GH¢1,982.00 was imposed as fines on drivers who flouted road traffic and driving regulations in 2012.

Sup. Gyasi said the drivers were fined between GH¢50 and GH¢100 for over-speeding, overloading, driving without license and drink- driving.

He appealed to transport unions to help the MTTU to ensure sanity on the roads.

Sup. Gyasi said in-service training was being organized for personnel of the Unit to enable them perform their duties diligently to prevent road crashes.

He called on the Municipal Assembly and philanthropists to support the Unit with vehicles to facilitate patrol duties.
