Kwahu honours teachers

Mpraeso (E/R), Dec.21, GNA - The Kwahu South and Kwahu East District Directorates of Education have organized a joint ceremony to reward 63 teachers and non-teaching staff who distinguished themselves between 2005 and 2008 in the two districts.

Two of the award winners are dead and so were honoured posthumously while many of the award winners have retired from the teaching service. The award winners were presented with table top refrigerators, television sets, DVD players, bicycles and certificates. Also four primary schools in deprived and inaccessible areas in Asempa, Gyaekasa, Bonkrase and Odotorkokor where each school has a teacher teaching the whole of the primary school were presented with a bicycle each. The Kwahu South District Chief Executive, Mr Joseph Omeri, said despite interventions to improve teaching and learning by successive governments, some schools in his district scored zero per cent at the last Basic Education Certificate Examination. He therefore called on teachers to work hard and avoid the scoring of zero per cent at this year's examination.

Mr Omeri called on civil society organizations, corporate bodies and all those who directly or indirectly benefit from education to support the organization of the best teachers' awards ceremony to honour teachers. The Kwahu South District Director of Education, Mr Abraham Sowah, urged teachers to work hard to improve the academic performance of schools in the area to motivate the District Assembly, individuals and other stakeholders in education to support the best teacher award scheme.
