Four die in accident at Mempeasem on Easter Monday

Elmina, April 14, GNA - Two people died on the spot and two others later at the Central Regional Hospital at Cape Coast, when a 33-seater Benz Bus travelling from Takoradi to Accra collided head-on with a Hyundai tipper truck at Mempeasem, near Elmina on Easter Monday. The body of Joseph Essien, the driver of the Benz Bus, and those of the other three, whose identities were unknown have been deposited at the morgue at the hospital.

Superintendent Joseph S. Haywood, the Elmina Divisional Police Commander, who briefed the GNA on the accident on Tuesday, said 26 passengers on board the bus and the driver of the truck, who were seriously injured, were admitted at the hospital while three others with minor injuries were treated and discharged. According to Supt. Haywood the injuries of the victims were severe because of their contact with metals of the seats of the vehicle which were close to each other.

Supt. Haywood said the driver of the truck tried to overtake a fleet of vehicles on a roll and in the process collided with the Benz. He commended the Cape Coast and Elmina Fire Service Personnel and a man who volunteered to assist the police in conveying the victims to the hospital for their prompt response. 14 April 09
