Committee to campaign against fog and auxiliary lights

Sunyani (B/A), June 5, GNA - A 15-member committee comprising members of the National Road Safety Commission, Department of Vehicle Licensing Authority and the Regional National Fire Service is to embark on an educational campaign in Brong Ahafo to sensitise the public on the negative effects and wrong use of fog and auxiliary lights. Mr Daniel Wuaku, Brong-Ahafo Regional Coordinator of the National Road Safety Commission announced at an emergency stakeholders meeting in Sunyani on Thursday.

The meeting was aimed at soliciting views from stakeholders to help address the problem.

He said it had come to the notice of the Road Safety Commission that, heavy duty vehicles and buses flout regulations regarding the use of fog and other auxiliary lights and this called for immediate action as they turned to blind some road users and often led to accidents. "Heavy duty and bus drivers have installed fog and other lights more than the legally permissible number required, (Road Traffic Regulations 1974 LI 953 Sub-regulations 6, 7 and 8) and this often leads to traffic crash", he stated.

The Regional Coordinator appealed to the media to spearhead the campaign on the flouting of regulations regarding the use of fog and auxiliary lights.

Mr. James Boanuh, Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, said series of public announcements would be made to educate the public about the problem and also to warn drivers to dismantle their fog and auxiliary lights. He said the police would initiate an exercise when the need arose. Mr K. Amega, Regional Licensing Officer of the DVLA, stressed the need for the intensification of public education on the wrong usage of fog and auxiliary lights to mitigate the dangers that occur on the roads and guarantee the safety of road users. 5 May 08
