Proprietor commends government for assistance to schools

Haatso (GAR), May 1, GNA - Mr. Bernard Kyeremeh, proprietor of the Saint Elizabeth Basic School at Haatso, a suburb of Accra has appealed to the government to consider extending the supply of textbooks, the school feeding programme and the provision of free transport for basic school pupils to private schools.

He stated that privileges enjoyed by public schools should be extended to private schools since the parents of such pupils also pay the Value Added Tax (VAT) part of which was used to assist in the development of education in the country.

Mr. Kyeremeh who was speaking during the 10th Speech and Prize Giving Day of the school also called on the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports to involve teachers in the planning and formulation of policies on education since they were the ones to apply whatever had been decided on in the classroom.

He said the School was 28th out of ninety-five Junior Secondary schools in the Ga-East District, in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) while it was among the schools in Haatso-Papao that obtained the best result.

Mr. Kyeremeh appealed to parents to provide the necessary learning materials of their children, discipline them when they misbehaved and to attend Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings. An Assistant Director of Education, Mr. Ken Abebrese, called on pupils to desist from throwing rubbish about since the attitude could lead to chocked gutters during the rainy season leading to floods. He announced that a new inspectorate directorate would be establish outside the Ghana Education Service to supervise all basic and secondary schools.

Mr. Wim Buursen, who represented the Prisma Group from Netherlands, cut the tape to inaugurate a new 18-classroom building sponsored by the group.

Rev Mary Doe Asare of the AME Zion Church Tema unveiled a plaque to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the school. Pupils who excelled in the various subjects were presented with prizes.
