Work to commence on proposed Tijjaniya University

Zaeem Abdul Wadud Haruna Cisse, National President of the Tijjaniya Muslims of Ghana, has donated a parcel of land at Asokore in the Ashanti Region for construction works to begin on a proposed Tijjaniya university college.

The Zaeem announced this at the general meeting of the Tijjaniya sect in Tamale, attended by regional leaders of the sect, Imams and other Islamic scholars.

The construction of the university is in line with his objective of promoting education in the country, especially in the Muslim communities.

A statement signed by Alhaji Marzuk Azindoo, Head of Publicity and Communications of the Tijjaniya Muslims of Ghana, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said the participants at the meeting also agreed to liaise with key institutions in Ghana to harness the potential human resource of the members to contribute to national development.

It announced that the sect would soon be opening a community based arbitration centre to deal with issues like domestic violence, inheritance, and the issuance of marriage and death certificates.

The statement also urged Muslim students and the public to report suspicious behaviours of individuals to a community chief, local Tijjaniya representative or to the office of the National Chief Imam to help address issues of extremism.

It condemned the violence that has recently characterised the political scene in the country, and urged leadership of the various parties to guide their supporters to be mindful of their actions and utterances to avoid destroying the peace of the nation.

It said the sect would soon come out with a radio station and newspaper in its attempt to help correct some of the misconceptions about Islam, and also guide Muslims and other faiths on the true teachings of Islam.

“Members of the sect and the public are encouraged to check our new website www.tijjaniyamuslims.org for regular updates, information and guidance and how to live a peaceful life with one another,” it said.

The statement said prayers were held for those who lost their lives in the 2015Hajj, and expressed the hope that the missing ones could be found.
