Water and Sanitation project is launched in Winneba

Winneba, May 11, GNA - The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa Doe, has appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to strengthen their structures to enhance the development of their areas. She said this in an address read for her at the launch of IDA Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project in the Central Region in Winneba on Tuesday.

The project, costing 75 million dollars, is funded by the International Development Agency (IDA) of the World Bank. It aims at improving behavioural patterns with respect to the use and access to safe water and to improve sanitation facilities in selected communities in the region. It is also to work towards the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals for water and sanitation in the municipalities. The Regional Minister said 13 MMDAs in the region are to benefit from five-year-project.

They are Upper Denkyira West, Upper Denkyira East, Awutu Senya, Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira, Assin South, Assin North, Agona East, Effutu, Mfantseman, Gomoa East, Gomoa West and Cape Coast Metropolitan Assemblies.

Mrs Benyiwa Doe said the project would provide 200 boreholes, eight small towns pipe systems, eight limited mechanized water distribution systems and institutional KVIPs. She said the programme would build the capacities of participating MMDAs and the RCC and resource them with vehicles and office equipments.

She appealed to the Assemblies to contribute their counterpart fund to ensure a smooth implementation of the project. 11 May 11
