W/R NDC Branch not happy with Peprah's Transfer.

Takoradi Sept. 25, GNA- The Western Regional Branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its disappointment about the "Inhuman and Humilating" circumstances under which the convicted former Finance Minister Mr. Kwame Peprah was transferred from the Ho prison to the Sekondi Prison.

Reacting to Mr. Peprah's transfer at a press conference at Takoradi on Thursday, the Regional Chairman, Nana Alex Asamoah said the manner in which Mr. Peprah was being handled was "humiliating and frustrating". He said Mr. Peprah is not a "security threat to the state that is why during his trial he was given a self recognisance bail and therefore, saw no reason why Mr. Peprah should be treated in such an awful manner.

Nana Asamoah said despite Mr. Peprah's ill health he was transferred, from Ho prisons to the prisons headquarters before being whisked to Sekondi Prison during the un-holly hours on Tuesday.

He said on hearing about his transfer to Sekondi, Mrs. Gloria Peprah, wife of Mr. Peprah and some officials of the NDC made frantic efforts to ascertain whether Mr. Peprah has been brought to Sekondi but the prison authority in Sekondi denied any knowledge of his transfer. Nana Asamoah however, confirmed that Mr. Peprah has indeed being transferred to the Sekondi Prison arriving there at about 1.00 a.m. on Wednesday.

He said Mrs Peprah and two members of the NDC in the Region had visited him and interacted for 30 minutes with Mr. Peprah, who looked pale, sick and weak.

Nana Asamoah alleged that the driver who brought Mr. Peprah to Sekondi drove recklessly just to scare him.

He regretted that at Ho Prison Mr. Peprah requested that he should be allowed to be attended to by his private Doctor but his request was turned down.

Nana Asamoah said the Daily Guide News paper on its edition of September 25 this year claimed that Mr. Peprah was transferred to Sekondi because some friends were planning to help him escape from the hospital where he was receiving treatment for malaria and settle him in exile.

He therefore, urged the Minister of Interior to confirm or to deny the Daily Guids's report since the NDC regards the report as a frame-up by the Government to cover its wicked deeds.

Nana Asamoah said the prison authority has authorised the wife of Mr. Peprah to visit her husband once a week in the company of two other people, which he said was not reasonable.
