Upper West Professionals urged to stay back and work in the region

Nadowli, Aug 8, GNA - Naa Dr. Francis Banka, a former Regional Director of Health Service, has appealed to all students undergoing professional training to consider staying back to work in the region in order to attract other people to the region.

"Most professionals refuse posting to the region because even Upper Westerners do not show any interest in helping their own people." How do you expect a 'stranger' to work in your region when your acts and behaviour are negatively skewed towards your own area"? Dr. Banka said this at a durbar of Nadowli District Students Union held at Nadowli.

He said it was discouraging that assemblies in the region spent so much money on the trainees but they ended up running away to other regions, which were already choked up with such professionals. "Although by their deeds they are still serving Ghanaians, it is further widening the disparity between the Upper West and other well endowed regions."

On girl-child education, Dr. Banka advised girls to eschew negative practices that lowered their image and rather engage in practices that would enhance their growth and development.

Wing Commander Eric Dakurah (RTD), Nadowli District Chief Executive, said the government would continue to support professional trainees in their various institutions but urged parents help since the assemblies alone could not sufficiently cater for the students.

He denounced the engagement of students in demonstrations and strikes and said they were not healthy for development and growth.

Mr. Elijah Bisung, Chairman of the Union, said the union had donated books and other items to Daffiama Secondary School, Queen of Peace Secondary School in Nadowli and Kaleo Secondary School. The Nadowli District Assembly also presented 35 wall clocks to students who were engaged in teaching in junior secondary schools during their holidays.
