Twifo-Hemang District to enact bye-laws to check truancy

Twifo-Praso (C/R) July 26, GNA - The Twifo-Hemang Lower Denkyira District Assembly in the Central Region, has set up a committee to formulate bye-laws that would prevent children from attending funerals or to loiter in the night. The committee, whose terms of reference are to facilitate academic excellence among the youth, comprise educationists, traditional authorities and members of the assembly.

Mr. Foster Andoh District Chief Executive (DCE) who is the Chairman of the committee said the bye-laws, which would also introduce preparatory hours for all school going children from 1800 hours to 2000 hours to enable the pupils to have sufficient time to study and to attend to all school assignments.

The DCE, who made this known to the Ghana News Agency at Twifo-Praso on Thursday, noted that for the past five years, the district has been experiencing downward trends in academic performance in all the schools hence the need for pragmatic measures to reverse the situation.

Mr. Andoh said the committee would also consider sponsoring brilliant but needy students in the junior and senior high schools in the district to further their education to tertiary schools. He said during the long vacation, the assembly would support tertiary students in the district to organise remedial classes for junior and senior high school students as well as and remedial students. Mr. Andoh said the assembly had embarked on refurbishment works on the Twifo-Praso town library and spending GH¢ 12,000.00 to complete Hemang Community library. 26 July 09
