Tema records an increase in birth and death registration

Tema, Feb 20, GNA - The Tema Municipal Birth and Death Registry (TMBDR) recorded an increase in the registration of both birth and death in 2005 as compared to that of 2004.

Records made available to the Ghana News Agency in Tema by Madam Hannah Twumasi-Ankrah, Tema Municipal Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, showed that in 2005 10,839 in contrast to 8,106 births were recorded in 2004.

She stated that, the registry recorded 2,252 deaths in 2005 where as it recorded 1,935 in 2004.

Out of the 10,839 births recorded in 2005, 5,500 were males while 5,339 were females and 4,240 out of the recorded 8,106 births in 2004 were males with 3,866 being females.

The statistics showed that, in the first quarter of 2004, the registry recorded 1,712 births out of which 916 were males while 796 were females and also recorded 1,368 males and 1,236 females totalling 2,604 in the second quarter of the same year.

In the third quarter of 2004, Madam Twumasi-Ankrah stated that out of 2,413 births recorded, males accounted for 1,246 with 1,167 females, adding that for the fourth quarter of 2004, the TMBDR recorded 999 males and 928 females totalling 1,927.

Giving the records for 2005 births, she said it recorded a total of 2,001 in the first quarter in which 1,011 were males and 990 were females, noting that, in the second quarter however, the female birth recorded were 1,758 and male birth, 1,736.

The Tema Municipal Registrar stated that records shows that, in the third quarter it recorded 1,467 males and 1,437 female births totalling 2,904, she said the last quarter of the year 2005 saw the registry recording 1,286 male birth and 1184 female births totalling 2440.

Comparing the death recorded in 2004 to that of 2005, she stated that, in the first quarter of 2004, it recorded a total of 492 deaths with males taking 285 and females taking 207, while in 2005 it recorded a total of 618 deaths with males accounting for 348 and females 270. She further stated that, in the second quarter of 2004, the registry recorded a total of 475 deaths out of which 274 were males and 201 were females. "In the second quarter of 2005, we recorded a total of 528 deaths out of which 282 were males and 246 were females" she added. Madam Twumasi-Ankrah gave the statistics for the third quarter of 2004 as male deaths 290, female deaths 193 totalling 483 deaths. The records showed that in the third quarter of 2005, 331 male deaths and 255 female deaths were recorded totalling 586.

In the last quarter of 2005, the TMBDR recorded 1,258 male deaths as compared to that of 286 male deaths in 2004 while that of females increased from 199 in 2004 to 994 in 2005 totalling 485 for 2004 and 2252 for 2005. As to what accounted for the increase in record of birth and death in 2005 as compared to 2004, Madam Twumasi-Ankrah indicated that, her outfit embarked on a series of educational programme throughout the municipality and used volunteers who sent the registration forms to houses and the information collected entered into the register and certificates issued.
