Techiman inaugurates GAIT programme

Techiman, Dec 17, GNA - The Government Accountability Improve Trust (GAIT) programme, designed by the Co-operative League of the United States of America (CLUSA) is supporting the government in capacity building.

This will make the government responsive to the demands of civil societies and promote transparency, accountability and good governance at the local level.

Mrs Evelyn Arthur of CLUSA/GAIT said this at the inauguration of the Techiman District Civic Union (TECU).

She said good governance is recognized as one of the key factors for poverty reduction and the promotion of economic growth and that the GAIT programme is aimed at ensuring good governance.

''All over the world there is a clarion call to get civil society to be part of the decision-making process and experience has shown that decisions taken by local governments are better implemented if the people are consulted and involved,'' Mrs Arthur added. She advised district assemblies "not to govern the people but to govern with the people."

Mrs Arthur said since the inception of CLUSA/GAIT in 2001 it has opened 20 offices in the 110 districts and had designed capacity building programmes.
