Teachers must support their leadership

Offinso, (ASH) July 23, GNA – An appeal has been made to teachers to remain calm and give every support to the leadership of GNAT and NAGRAT as they worked to resolve all outstanding issues relating to the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).

Mr Abraham Bonsu, Ashanti Regional GNAT Secretary, said they should avoid agitations and labour unrest.

He was presenting a paper on “The New Pay Structure for Teachers” at a seminar organized by the Offinso College of Education for 292 post-internship students.

He said it was important to appreciate that the SSSS, meant to ensure equity, fairness and transparency in Public Service salary administration was being implemented in phases over a five-year period.

Additionally, it was significant for all to accept that under the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) Act, no single labour union could negotiate for salary increase.

He encouraged the teachers to take advantage of long distance education programmes to upgrade themselves.

Mr Kwaku Acquah of the Teachers’ Fund, asked the newly trained teachers to register with the fund so as to enjoy its benefits.

He said through the Fund’s subsidiary company, a 1,000-bed hostel facility had been built at the University of Ghana.

It has also constructed a six-storey office complex in Accra for rental.
