Takoradi library cries for help

Takoradi, July 4, GNA - Lack of books, chairs and tables at the Takoradi library and leakage of its roof whenever it rains have turned the facility into a white elephant.

Miss Alethaia Nartey, an Assistant Librarian, told the GNA in an interview that senior secondary school students, tertiary and other professional institutions are unable to find books that suit their needs and have stopped patronising the place.

Ms. Nartey said rooms in the library are too small and did not facilitate the free movement of persons and the ventilation system is poor.

"The children's section can contain only 12 children at a time and school children are also not patronising it as is expected." Ms. Nartey some people have converted the back of the library into a waste disposal site and the odour from such refuse could create health problems for users of the library.

She said the library needed expansion, modern furniture, a computer room and other facilities to make it more attractive and appealed to non-governmental organisations and philanthropists to assist. Ms. Nartey appealed to the environmental department of the Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly to re-locate the refuse dump.
