TBAs delivered 923 babies in BAK last year

Kuntanase (Ash), March 18, GNA- Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma (BAK) district of Ashanti delivered a total of 923 babies throughout the district last year. Madam Helena Assuming, secretary to the district's Association of Traditional Birth Attendants, who disclosed this, said the figure represented about 23 per cent of child delivery in the district last year.

Speaking at the inauguration of the association at a durbar of chiefs and people of the district at Kuntanase on Tuesday, she said in spite of their achievement, they lack common delivery points or centres in the communities to facilitate their work and asked the assembly to assist them.

Madam Assuming also appealed to the government to provide them with identification cards as well as first aid boxes to enable them take care of very simple cases instead of always referring such cases to the hospitals.

She called for co-operation from the unit committees, assembly members, chiefs and opinion leaders in the various communities to enable them work effectively. A six-member executive was sworn into office.
