Social Welfare Department holds seminar for NGO

Dormaa Ahenkro, Nov 18, GNA - Ms Annie Kpedekpo, Dormaa District Director of the Department of Social Welfare, has urged parents to be abreast with laws on proper parenthood to make them more responsible to their children.

She was addressing members of Dormaa Ahenkro branch of Global Patriots Consolidation (GLOPAC), an NGO committed to the welfare of children. The lecture was to give the members an insight into the operations of the Department regarding the welfare of children.

Ms Kpedekpo said the Children's Act of 1998 included the right of children to live and grow up with parents, name and nationality, education, parental control, health and dignity.

She, however, expressed regret that most parents treated these rights with impunity due to ignorance and illiteracy.

Ms Kpedekpo said the Department, in collaboration with Dormaa District Assembly, would organize workshops to educate target groups of parents on the Children's Act.

Mr Gordon Asubonteng, Executive Director of GLOPAC, asked members to be good ambassadors of the Children's Act so that they could in turn educate their colleagues about the rights.
