Several Communities in Gomoa East affected by floods

Gomoa Awomberew (C/R), June 25, GNA - A total of 1,175 people living in communities around the banks of River Ayensu in Gomoa East District of th e Central Region were displaced by the heavy down pour of last Sunday, June

20, 2010 which caused River Ayensu to overflow its banks. The affected communities were, Gomoa Techiam, Gomoa Ayensuadzie Ekuamkrom, Pamkfokrom, Adwukwa, Okyereko, and Nsuayeam where about 120 structures have been destroyed by the floods.

Academic work in schools at Techiam, Ayensuadzie and Nsuayeam has be en disrupted, while people in the communities have been evacuated and camped at Gomoa Awomberew. Mr Daniel Domie, Gomoa East District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), disclosed this when he visited Awomberew and other affected communities, accompanied by newsmen.

Mr Domie asked the school children at Gomoa Techima, Ayinsuadzie and

Nsuayem to join their counterparts at Awomberew until the situation was normalised. He announced that measures were being taken to supply relief items t o the victims, adding that his outfit would liaise with the Disease Control

Unit of the Ministry of Health to offer the people the necessary advice a nd guidelines in order to protect them against the out break of post-flood diseases. He advised the people of Ayensuadzie not to go back to occupy the buildings in the town, saying that the nature of damage caused by the flo ods to the buildings required further examination to avoid additional problem s. Meanwhile, the Gomoa East District Assembly has provided the Distric t branch of NADMO an amount of GH¢2,000 to help manage the situation. The District NADMO Coordinator appealed to philanthropists, NGOs, Churches and private organisations to come to aid of the affected people.
