Sene District Spends ?2.8bn On Development Projects

Sene District, one of the deprive areas in the country, is spending about ?2.8 billion on developmental projects in the area. As at March 31, this year, the assembly had paid ?1,479,271.755.10 to contractors working on the various projects.

Speaking to the Chronicle at Kwame Danso, the district capital, Mr. Isaac Sunkwa Hyiaman, said the projects being undertaken by the assembly cut across all sectors of the economy in the district. Apart from the ?2.8 billion from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DAFC), the district is also benefiting from other funds from the government and donor agencies.

The DCE however did not disclose details of expenditure on the donor-funded projects, because they are either awarded from Accra or Sunyani. Those projects under donor funding, Chronicle learnt, are the rural electrification project, Atebubu-Kojokrom road via Kwame Danso, community water and sanitation phase II projects and a health project at Kwame Danso health.

Others are Social Investment Fund (SIF) Primary Education Rehabilitation Project (PERP). GTZ PRODICAP and District Towns III Projects and Ghana Poverty Reduction Program (GPRP) and HIPC Projects.

The rest include GETfund Project, VIP and Quality in Primary School (QUIPS) and US AID Projects.

Under the GPRP and SIF, the district is constructing schools at Kyemekrom, Menkor and Bantama. On the supply of furniture, 540 dual desks were supplied to the district and soon they would take delivery of teachers' tables and chairs. In all ?27 million was spent for the supply of the furniture.

To ensure total eradication of guinea worm, the assembly and the government of Ghana, Unicef and other organizations have planned to undertake drilling of boreholes in 58 communities and provisions of water, under the Small Town Water Supply Project, to two towns, namely Bantama and Kajaji.

According to the DCE, the roads are not moving as expected and therefore urged the financiers to release money for quick execution of the projects.

He also regretted that the Kwame Danso township roads have never seen any physical development, even though the roads are on contract.

The Kwame DansoAtebubu highway, which is in a very deplorable state, according to Mr. Hyiaman, is progressing steadily. The road has been neglected by NDC government over its eight years in office.
