Schools to study reproductive health

Assin Foso (C/R) Nov 17, GNA - Five districts in the Central Region are among 20 districts selected for a pilot programme to integrate reproductive health education into school curriculum in order to reduce the incidence of reproductive track infection and HIV/AIDS among adolescents.

They are the Assin, Cape Coast, Gomoa, Awutu/Effutu/Senya, and Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abrem districts.

The African Youth Alliance (AYA) is sponsoring the programme in conjunction with the National Population Council (NPC).

Launching the project for the Assin District Foso, the District Chief Executive, Mr Kwabena Karikari-Apau, said educating adolescents and young adults on sexual and reproductive health, will enable them to develop their potentials as well as contribute to the well-being of society.

He said the assembly would support the project so that the young adults and adolescents would be fully supported and well-informed to contribute constructively to the nation's development.

The Central Regional Population Officer, Mr Paul Gyan, observed that in spite of several programmes and interventions, many adolescents still lack the requisite information on reproductive health issues.

The NPC has therefore, teamed up with the AYA to ensure that programmes geared towards such issues are well co-ordinated.
