Schools excursions should be within District – KKDA

The Kpone-Katamanso District Assembly (KKDA) has cautioned school authorities against travelling out of the district with pupils on educational trips and excursions.

Alhaji Antiaye Tetteh, the Kpone-Katamanso District Chief Executive, who gave the advice, said the

District Education Directorate should ensure that schools limited excursions outside the district.

In a speech read on his behalf, at this year's President's party for pupils in the District, he said pictures and news reports of students perishing in accidents during such educational trips were worrying.

Alhaji Tetteh, who was a former vice-chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Unit

(GPRTU), however implored organizers of such trips to engage the services of qualified drivers, should the need arise for them to travel outside the District.

He also urged school authorities to ensure that vehicles used were properly maintained.

Touching on "celebrating the child", the theme for the party, he urged parents and other stakeholders to use the day to reflect on the lives of the children under their care.

He asked parents and teachers to imbibe the value of discipline and sense of orderliness in the children.

Madam Miriam Nana AMA Amoah, the Acting Greater Accra Director, Department of Children at the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection, said the party was held annually in any of the 16 districts in the Greater Accra Region.

Madam Amoah said the theme was to remind parents and stakeholders to ensure that children were well protected within the society.

She said as part of measures to ensure children's survival, 300 pupils drawn from 40 basic schools in the District have been registered for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
