Schoolboy knocked down by a car.

Tema, March 10, GNA - The Tema Circuit Court "B" has been told of how a school boy at Ashaiman, who was sacked from classes to go for the remaining 20,000 cedis school fees was knocked down by a vehicle that led to the amputation of his left leg.

Francis Adjartey Anum pleaded not guilty to two counts of driving without due care and attention to other road users, as well as negligently causing harm.

He was granted 50 million cedis bail to re-appear on March 17. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Alice Gyamfi told the court, presided over by Mr Stephen Teye that on November 11, 2003, Master Emmanuel Kwetey, who attends Adom Education Complex School at Ashaiman was sacked from school by the headmistress to go for the remaining 20,000 cedis school fees from his father.

She said Emmanuel, very zealous about his education decided to go out with his shoeshine box to hustle for the money, because his father was finding it difficult to pay.

Inspector Gyamfi said at about 4 p.m., while crossing the Tema-Accra motorway, near the Ashaiman underpass, a Mercedes Benz mini bus with registration number GW 1175 Q driven by the accused knocked down Emmanuel when coming from Tema to Accra with passengers on board. Emmanuel was seriously injured and was rushed to the Tema General Hospital where his left leg, which was badly injured, was immediately amputated.

She said a report was made to the police at Ashaiman and after investigations the driver was charged with the offences.
