Samartex sets up Thaumatin Plant

Samreboi (W/R), Dec 26, GNA- Samartex Company Limited, a timber firm, has established a plant to convert Thaumatin, a plant, into sugar. Mr. Gilmoar Dickson, General Manager of the company, announced this when Mr. Anthony Evans Amoah, Western Regional Minister and his deputy, Mr. Kwesi Blay visited the company on Thursday. He said sugar processed from the plant is a good substitute for pure sugar and is especially good for people suffering from diabetes, and could also be used to manufacture toothpaste and confectioneries.

Mr. Dickson said the company is diversifying its operations through plantation development, non-forest timber production and agriculture expansion to reduce pressure on forest resources. He said the company is implementing an apprentice training scheme with support from the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) for JSS leavers as well as a three-year management training programme for graduates.

Mr. Ofori Lartey, Agro-Forestry Manager of the Company, led the Minister and his deputy as well as Mr Alberto Tekyi, Amenfi West District Chief Executive, to inspect the Thaumatin Plant and other parts of the company.
