Saboba/Chereponi spends over 41 billion cedis on projects

Saboba (N/R), Nov. 8, GNA - The Saboba/Chereponi District Assembly has spent more than 41 billion cedis on development projects between 2004 and 2006.

The projects included the rehabilitation of roads, construction and rehabilitation of schools, rehabilitation of the Saboba water supply system, provision of KVIPs, extension of electricity to some rural communities and construction of residential accommodation for teachers and the police.

Mr Asumah Namoro Sanda, the DCE who briefed the GNA at Saboba, said 13 billion cedis of the money was part of the district's share of the Common Fund, the HIPC Fund provided 10 billion cedis while the British Department for International Development (DFID) made available about 16 billion cedis.

The remaining five billion cedis came from internally generated funds and the District Wide Assistant Projects (DWAPs). He said under the NPP administration, the district had seen a remarkable improvement particularly in the provision of educational and health infrastructure as well as assistance to farmers groups and reduction of poverty in the area.

Mr Sanda attributed the feat to the regular releases of the District Assemblies' Common Fund (DACF), GETFund, HIPC Funds and donor assistance to the district to embark on an aggressive development. He said the government was mindful of the difficulties in the rural areas and it would therefore always make funds available to meet some of the needs of the people.

Mr Sanda said about 80 per cent of the projects had been completed while the rest would be completed on schedule.

He said the European Union (EU), the Community-Based Rural Development Projects (CBRDP) and other donor agencies were supporting the development efforts of the assembly and called on the people to unite and sustain the prevailing peace for continuous development. Mr Sanda said the European Union had provided about 1.61 billion cedis under its 6th Micro Projects Programme (MPP) while the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) had also made available 800 million cedis to the district to undertake educational projects.
