Residents want Lorry Park at Saltpond by-pass

Saltpond (C/R), Jan. 26, GNA - Residents of the Saltpond By-Pass have appealed to the Mfantseman District Assembly to establish a lorry park to facilitate easy access to means of transport. Mr Usman Abass Chairman of the Saltpond branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), who made the appeal on behalf of the residents, explained that since the main Lorry Park was about two kilometres away from the main Accra-Cape Coast highway, commuters encountered difficulties in getting vehicles to and fro on their daily chores.

Mr Abass made the appeal when Mr Francis Egyaaku Donkoh, Assembly Member interacted with taxi drivers in the area on how best they could solve the problem, which had claimed the lives of a number of people in their attempt to cross the highway either after alighting or boarding a vehicle by the roadside. The Assembly Member said the by-pass was a gateway to Saltpond and that every effort would be made to make the entry and departure point convenient for commuters. He said efforts were being made to reconstruct a waiting shed, which was removed during the reconstruction of the Mankessim-Yamoransah Highway and that the lighting system at the place would also be improved.

Earlier at a meeting with the people of Nkubem and Estate, Mr Donkoh, who is also the Chairman of the Disaster Management Committee of the District Assembly, cautioned the people on how to handle fire during the Harmattan period. He cautioned the youth to be circumspect about how they celebrated victories of our National Team, the Black Starts during the on-going Africa Cup of nations Tournament to avoid disasters. 26 Jan. 08
