Residents in three communities threaten to demonstrate against KMA

Residents of three communities in Kumasi; Oti, Kuwait and Aprabon, have threatened to take to the streets to protest what they say is the poor management of the Oti landfill site by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

They said they could no longer live with the overpowering stench, mosquitoes and insects emanating from the dump site.

Mr. Cosmos Marfo, Chairman of the Kuwait Unit Committee, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that they lived with the constant fear of an imminent epidemic outbreak and it has come to their notice that many people, particularly children, have been having frequent bouts of malaria and diarrhoea.

He said all efforts at drawing the attention of the city authorities to the health hazard posed by the ill-managed landfill site has failed.

Mr. Marfo said waste carried in vehicles to the place are often uncovered, littering the road and creating conditions for house flies to breed and multiply their numbers.

He said social amenities including electricity supply promised them by the government, has also been left unfulfilled.

Osland Asaah, another resident, said dust nuisance from the laterite road running from the Kuwait-Junction to Dompoase was their other worry and that though the contract for the tarring of the road was awarded three years ago, the project seems to be abandoned.
