Residence Of Agordeke Appeals For A Pantoon On Agordeke- Kpando Lake

The Nana Agyeman Pantoon which sunk for the past 8 years on the Agordeke-
Kpando stretch of the Volta Lake eight years ago is yet to be replaced,
leaving the people of Agordrke in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District in
the Eastern Region and Kpando-Torkornu in the Volta Region with no option
than to travel with a wooden boat without a live jackets.

In 1995, over one hundred and fifty people died on the Volta Lake at
Amankwa-Tornu when their wooden boat capsized. People who live within the
banks of the volta lake still travel in a wooden boat without live jacket
on daily basis. One will have to travel for over two hours from Agordeke in
the Eastern Region to Kpando in the Volta Region. Nursing mothers are left
at the Mercy of the strong tides of the lake with their day or month old
babies.

In an interview with Isifu Yakubu Tanko who is the acting station manager
of the Adawso Ferry Station for the Volta Transport Company said water
buses with air condition will arrive soon and commuters will find a safer
way of traveling on the volta lake.

Irrespective of these up coming development, commuters are crying out for a
pantoon, which they claim is safer than the wooden boat, not considering
that the unavailability of life jackets in their current situation also
poses a threat to their lives.

In connection to this, the District Chief Executive for the Kwahu Afram
Plains North District, Windham Emil Afram has assured the residence that
government will provide pantons early September 2015.
