Rainstorm destroys schools in Akuapem South Municipality

Nsawam, June 17, GNA - A severe rainstorm that hit Yaw Nyarkokrom, near Nsawam in the Akuapem South Municipality, has ripped off the roof of the local primary school, displacing the about 300 pupils and disrupting teaching and learning.

The storm also destroyed Sakyikrom L/A Primary School, when a tree fell on the building and injured two pupils who were treated and discharged at Notre Dame Hospital at Adoagyiri.

Dr Godfried Osei-Bonsu Twum, Municipal Chief Executive who made this known to the Ghana News Agency said Panpanso Teshie Primary School and Aburi Secondary Technical School were also affected by the storm. He urged people at the affected communities to plant trees to serve as wind breaks.

Dr Osei-Bonsu Twum said government would provide building materials and roofing sheets to the affected schools to ensure that teaching and learning is not disrupted.

Mr Kwabena Asante, Municipal Co-ordinating Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation appealed to public-spirited individuals and organisations to support the schools, which also lost property including textbooks.
