RCC condemns spate of violence at Jamasi

Kumasi, Jan 17, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) has condemned the recent spate of violence among the youth at Jamasi in the Afigya-Sekyere district of Ashanti. These disturbances, it said, had not only led to wanton destruction of properties but also caused considerable injuries to some individuals, while disrupting the peace in the area.

In a statement issued in Kumasi on Tuesday, the RCC warned that it would not countenance such misbehaviour and cautioned youth groups in the region to desist from such acts. It therefore warned that it would deal ruthlessly with the culprits who would foment trouble.

"We wish to assure the law abiding citizens in Jamasi that RCC has put in place adequate measures to protect them, while the police are intensifying their investigations into the disturbances and those found to have breached the peace will face the full rigours of the law," it said.

The Council, however, impressed upon the media to report the incident dispassionately and not to distort the facts to inflame passions, pointing out that the row was not between the Muslim community and Ashantis as a section of the media sought to portray. The disagreement, the statement said, was between the Kotokoli youth and a section of the Ashanti community at Jamasi over the usage of a football park.
