Poly students complain gov’t directive being flouted

Polytechnic students have said the National Service Secretariat was flouting government directive that final year polytechnic students should be placed in regions where they schooled.

This would enable them to combine national service with their preparations for their final examination which had been delayed due to the recent strike action by the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG).

Ms Dora Dwamena, a final year student of Sunyani Polytechnic, said early last month the Ministry of Education issued a statement that polytechnic students who could not complete the semester as a result of the POTAG strike would be posted to regions where they schooled.

Ms Dwamena said the policy of the government was not being complied with by the NSS as she had to travel from Sunyani to Koforidua to register for the National Service and go back to school to continue with the semester.

Ms Deborah Obeng, a student of Sunyani Polytechnic, accused the government of feet dragging which resulted in the strike action and said the government could have acted early to resolve the issue.

Mr Lucas Aryee, a student of Takoradi Polytechnic said, said he had a call from his colleagues that they were writing their mid semester examinations and he could not take part because he was in Koforidua to register for the National Service.

He called on the Minister of Education to ensure that the directives of the Ministry were complied with to save the final year students polytechnics from unnecessary pressure and difficulties.
