Policeman in custody for shooting a driver in the chest

Cape Coast, Aug. 25, GNA - Police Corporal Charles Effah stationed at Jukwa, was last Thursday arrested and placed in custody by the Central Regional Police Command, for allegedly shooting a driver in the chest at Jukwa near Cape Coast.

The driver, Eric Mensah, is on admission at the Central Regional hospital and is said to be responding to treatment.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Cape Coast on Monday, the Regional Police Commander, Mr Bernard Guyiri Dery said on the day of the incident, Mensah allegedly pulled up behind another vehicle, which had stopped at a 'revenue check point' mounted by the Twifo-Hemang Lower Denkyira district assembly, at Jukwa.

He said as soon as the driver of the other vehicle received the signal that he could leave Mr Mensah also drove off and stopped about 20 meters from the check point, although he had been signalled to stop by the revenue collector, one Mr Kwesi Taylor.

According to Mr Dery, the revenue collector confronted Mensah as to why he did not stop at the checkpoint. This resulted in a scuffle between them.

Corporal Effah who was on duty at the point, however, separated the two men, after which Mensah was returning to his vehicle without paying the revenue.

The Regional Commander said Effah warned the driver not to drive off unless he paid the money, but Mensah ignored him and was about to move when Corporal Effah, in an attempt to shoot one of the tyres on the vehicle, allegedly missed and hit Mensah in the chest. 25 Aug. 03
