Police retrieve cables suspected to have been smuggled to Togo

Ho, Oct. 29, GNA- A combined police team from Ghana and Togo last Saturday retrieved four drums of low-tension cables valued at about 100 million cedis at Agamorkope, a Togolese village, near Kpetoe in the Ho district.

The cables are believed to have been clandestinely acquired in Ghana and smuggled to Togo. No arrests have been made but the Police said they are investigating.

Mr Kofi Duku Arthur, Volta Regional Police Commander, told Journalists that following a tip-off that some cables were being taken across the border near Kpetoe into Togo, Mr Kwame Anane, Deputy Superintendent of Police in-charge of Kpetoe District entered into negotiations with Police in Togo to help in retrieving the cables. He said under a memorandum of understanding between Ghana and Togo in checking cross border crime, the Togolese Police Command allowed the Ghanaian Police team, led by Mr Anane into Togo and in a joint search located and retrieved the cables.

Mr Arthur said no individual or company has so far reported the loss of any cables, adding that the retrieved cables had been deposited at the Kpetoe Police station while investigations continued. He observed that there had been similar cases of smuggling of cables into Togo in the area where work is currently going on to connect some towns along the southern part of the eastern gateway of Ghana to the national grid. 29 Oct 03
