Piina Secondary School has no electricity, potable water

Lambussie, (UWR), July 13, GNA- The Piina Secondary School in the Jirapa/Lambussie District has no electricity and potable water, a situation that was impacting negatively on admission and students' social and academic work.

Students were refusing to accept admissions into the school because of the lack of electricity and potable water, the chief of the Lambussie, Kuoru Iddrisu Bamie Yesseh III, told the Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama at a durbar of chiefs at Lambussie during his recent tour of the Upper West Region.

He said the school, which is the only secondary school in the Lambussie constituency, whose inhabitants were enjoying electricity. Kuoru Yesseh appealed to the government to consider providing the school with electricity and potable water to increase admissions and facilitate higher academic performance as well as, reduce the burden of the students who spend class hours looking for water from unsafe sources.

Chief Yesseh was also not happy that low cost buildings at Hamile had been left out to deteriorate and collapse; pointing out that the lack of maintenance culture by governments had been a drain on the national economy.

He commended the government for the numerous development projects it was undertaking throughout the country but expressed dismay at the inequity in the distributions of development projects in the district. "My traditional area has been marginalised in terms of development projects, the district cake is in favour of the Jirapa traditional area and this is not in the interest of unity", he pointed out. Kuoru Yesseh appealed to the government to establish a teacher training college in the area to cater for the large number of senior secondary school graduates from the Nadowli, Lawra and Jirapa/Lambussie Districts. 13 July 07
