Parents of scholarship applicants to prove rates payment - DCE

Kyebi, Aug 5, GNA - Parents and guardians of applicants of the East Akim District Assembly Scholarship Scheme, will have to prove payment of basic and other rates, Mr. Emmanuel Victor Asihene, District Chief Executive, said on Monday.

He was speaking at the Abuakwa State College, Kyebi, during an interview of parents and guardians of the applicants, which was held simultaneously with the selection examination.

A total of 40 out of the 230 applicants would be selected. Mr. Asihene said although there were many poor but brilliant students who needed support, the limited number of scholarships called for a selection criteria.

He said students with aggregates between six and 30 at last year's Basic School Certificate Examination from the area in first year at senior secondary schools qualified for the award. However, applicants should pass an examination in English Language, Mathematics and General Paper.

The DCE said the Assembly was going to spend 65 million cedis on scheme this year while 30 million cedis was spent on 35 students in 2002.

Mr. Asihene said the Assembly was supporting 150 students in teacher training colleges with 300,000 cedis each per annum, adding that, the first batch of 80 would pass out at the end of the academic year.
