Oguaa tenants laud government's decision

Cape Coast, March 18, GNA- Members of the 'Ola Low Cost Estates' Tenants Association in Cape Coast on Thursday commended government's intention to sell out houses to sitting tenants.

They therefore urged the government not be swayed in its efforts to assist workers.

There are a total of 508 of such houses in the Cape Coast municipality.

Members of the association at a press conference to declare its stance on the issue to react to comments by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) that the policy would affect workers who go on transfer. The association said it was surprised at the comments of the TUC because the union's leadership should rather have congratulated the government.

It questioned where the TUC leadership was, when the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) sold its houses, knowing that they were built through workers contribution, and why the TUC itself had also sold out its houses at Apowa, Accra and Kumasi. The statement cautioned the TUC leadership "to be extra cautious" in dealing with matters affecting workers, and regretted that "of late government policies that go to enhance the future of workers, are often opposed by the same leadership of the workers".
