Nkoranza and Kintampo districts hit by yam glut

Nkoranza, (B/A) July 21, GNA- Yam Farmers at Nkoranza and Kintampo districts in Brong Ahafo have been forced to sell the produce at ridiculously low prices because of bumper harvest. The yam glut has placed the farmers in further dilemma as buyers have preferred last year's crop, which is plentiful on the market to the fresh ones harvested. Madam Akosua Woraewaa, Chairperson of the Nkoranza Yam Producers and Marketing Society, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkoranza at the weekend "it takes us weeks to sell the hitherto fast-selling crop even at very low prices." Mr Yak Seidu, Chairman of the District Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), said large quantities of both the old and new yams were locked up in some communities due to the deplorable roads caused by the heavy rains. He called for storage facilities at the district capitals so that foodstuffs such as yam and cocoyam could be treated and stored for longer periods.
