New Military Recruits Training Centre for Akoefe

Ho, Feb 1, GNA- A new military recruits training centre is to be established at Akoepe in the Ho Municipality.

The site was originally intended for the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, now located in Accra. Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor Minister of Defence announced this at a durbar of all ranks and civilian employees as part of his one-day visit to the 66 Artillery Regiment in Ho on Wednesday.

He explained that the centre was moved to Accra because the proposed site, a disused facility of the erstwhile Borders Guards, lacked the infrastructure such as water and electricity for the project to take off immediately as intended at the time.

Dr Addo-Kufour also announced that all military garrisons in the country are to benefit from a 10 million dollar credit approved by cabinet for refurbishment of infrastructure for the military. He said it had been proposed that computer centres with Internet facilities be provided for all military garrisons. The Minister said apart from the rehabilitation of living quarters' of soldiers at the Ho Regiment and the replacement of water storage tank among others, the entire road network and drainage system at the barracks would be tackled soon.

Dr Addo-Kufuor's accounts of the massive infrastructure works going on in military outfits in Accra were illustrated by slides. He said the upgrading works at the 37 Military Hospital over the years had turned it into a first class hospital in the sub-region whose consulting rooms were fully automated. The Minister said similar health facilities had been planned for the Military in Kumasi.

Earlier, Dr Addo-Kufuor paid a courtesy call on Mr Kofi Dzamesi, Volta Regional Minister and Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State.

The Minister who was received at the Agbogbomefia's palace by Togbe Kasa III, Senior Divisional Chief expressed joy at the good military-civilian relations in the municipality. 01, Feb 06
