Navrongo Traditional Council bans alcohol consumption during funerals

Navrongo (UER) Oct. 16, GNA - The Navrongo Traditional Council in the Kassena-Nankana East District of the Upper East Region, has taken measures to stop the consumption of alcoholic beverages during funerals.

To enforce the ban a taskforce has been set up to monitor all funeral activities in the area, while the council is also establishing a traditional court to try the culprits.

The Navrongo Regent, Pe Arthur Balinia made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Navrongo.

Pe Balinia noted that the causes of disputes in the traditional area are often linked to the intake of alcohol during funerals, leading to the breech of law and order.

He said abuse of alcohol is also affecting the upkeep of families and the socio-economic development of the area.

Pe Balinda appealed to the people to comply with the ban to ensure sanity.

Mr Joseph Wegure, a social activist, appealed to the people to spend less on funerals and channel their resources to fight the high level of poverty in their communities.
