Nadowli Assembly finally elects Presiding Member

Nadowli, April 7, GNA - Mr Andrew Kpan, the Lawra

District Director of Education, has been elected the Presiding

Member (PM) for the Nadowli District Assembly, after several

unsuccessful attempts. Mr Kpan, 59, polled 52 votes to beat his only opponent, Mr

Philip Belegha, who secured 19 votes, out of the 73 Assembly

members that took part in the election. The Assembly, after its inauguration on March 15, attempted

electing the PM but failed because the then candidates, namely;

Mr Sung-yera Haruna Callistus and Mr Batoe Livingstone failed

to obtain the required percentage of votes needed to get the nod. This resulted in the postponement of the exercise to Tuesday,

April 5, which still did not produce a winner, as both candidates

polled the same number of votes, after two unsuccessful

attempts. The Assembly therefore dropped both candidates to allow

for fresh nominations, which resulted in the nomination of Mr

Kpan and Mr Belegha. Mr Kpan eventually emerged winner in the first round of

voting to relieve members from the stress of continues balloting. Alhaji Issahaku Salia, Upper West Regional Minister

commended the Assembly members for a good job done and

urged them to unite and work diligently to bring the needed

development to the district. He advised them to see the task ahead of them as sacrificial

and not as a means to better their lot, to the neglect of the people

they represented. Alhaji Salia wished them God's patience, to run the affairs of

the Assembly in unity, so that the people of the district would

benefit from government policies and programmes. Mr. Abu Kansangbata, the District Chief Executive (DCE)

called on the Assembly members to eschew partisanship and

focus on the development of the district. He said he enjoyed maximum co-operation and support from

the past Assembly and appealed to the new Assembly to extend

to him the same co-operation and support so that together, they

could move the development of the district forward.
