Winneba, (C/R), Oct. 2, GNA - The National Mosquito Control Programme, aimed at reducing malaria cases in the country has successfully started in the Central Region. The Assistant Central Regional Supervisor of the Programme, Mr John Sackey made this known to the Ghana News Agency in Winneba on Friday. The programme is being undertaken by the Ministry of Health and Zoom Lion Company, currently responsible for refuse cleaning in most part of the country.

Mr Sackey said a team of twenty spraying gangs trained by the company in each of the districts were being used for the programme, adding that the rest of the districts would be covered by Friday October 9, 2009.

He said during the exercise refuse dumps, potential mosquito bleeding grounds, stagnant waters, drainages and public toilets at the communities were sprayed. Mr Sackey said the spraying exercise would continue to take place every month until malaria cases at the institutions were drastically reduced.

Miss Monica Vivian Kumah, Effutu Municipal Environmental Health Assistant, told the Ghana News Agency that the programme was jointly undertaken by the Zoom Lion and personnel from the service. She said the huge refuse dump at Osin, drainages at the fish market at the beach, and Low Cost were among areas that benefited from the programme. 2 Oct. 09
