More than 200 fire cases recorded in Eastern Region

The Eastern Region has recorded 225 fire cases by end of November, this year, which damaged properties worth two billion cedis.

The Eastern Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Mr. Albert Acquaye, who disclosed this at Koforidua on Thursday at a fire rescue demonstration, said no death was recorded during the period.

The fire demonstration, which took place in a three-storey building housing the Ghana News Agency, a rural bank and Anglican Educational Unit, involved a mock rescue of stranded occupants from the rooftop of the building during a fire outbreak.

Mr. Acquaye said the service would organise more of such programmes, especially at the markets, for market women to help prevent the occurrence of fire outbreaks in the region.

He advised members of the public not to hesitate to approach officers of the service on matters concerning fire outbreaks and how to prevent them.

A Sub-Officer of the Service, Mr. E.A Arthur, explained that the main role of the service was to prevent disasters and not merely extinguishing fires, as wrongly perceived by the public.
