Many Hepatitis-B sufferers in Nandom found to be babies

Nandom (UW/R), April 12, GNA - A visiting medical officer has expressed concern at the high rate of hepatitis 'B' in the Nandom area in Upper West region, saying it was more disturbing as many of the victims were children born with the disease. Dr. Emmanuel Aleser of the Sunyani Regional Hospital, in the company of two other Medical Officers who visited the area earlier this week to offer free medical services to over 800 people, warned that the disease was a silent killer and urged adults to have checkups from time to time. Speaking to a group of patients in Nandom, he advised those suffering from Hepatitis B to desist from consuming alcohol so as not to aggravate their condition and asked all adults to stop unprotected sex and embrace healthy life styles.

The visiting medical team treated people with various health problems, including, malaria, typhoid fever, hypertension and diarrhoea. They also performed surgeries. Members of the Nandom Youth Forum (NYF), a local NGO which organized the free health outreach programme, appealed to doctors who hail from the area to accept postings to the region so as to serve their people. They noted that the area was poor and needed the support of everybody to help develop it.
