Make Christmas accident free - drivers urged

Agona Swedru, Nov 7, GNA - Nana Yaw Manu, National Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has urged drivers to ensure an accident free Christmas this year.

He was addressing the Central Regional branch of the Union at a delegates' conference at Agona Swedru, during which new Executives were elected for a four-year term.

"Precious lives are being lost on the highways through reckless and careless driving especially during Christmas festivities," Nana Manu said. He advised them to be careful and to observe road traffic regulations to save lives and property, saying, "Every passenger wants to travel and get home alive but not in a morgue".

Nana Manu called on drivers to be disciplined, maintain their vehicles, avoid using worn-out tyres and defective headlights and "unnecessary overtaking and speeding" to ensure safety on the roads. Transport owners and drivers should insure their vehicles and pay their income tax promptly to enable the government to undertake more development projects including road maintenance.

He called for co-operation between the new Executives and the members to ensure the smooth administration of the Union. 07 Nov 03
