MP aspirant wants market relocated

An aspiring Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu seat, Mr. Christopher Eleblu, has questioned the decision to build a new ultra-modern market at Fordzorku in the Forzdorku Traditional Area in the Volta region despite concerns about its viability.

According to him, a feasibility study conducted by North Tongu District Assembly indicated that the market would not serve its intended purpose in view of several factors including the small population size it was built at the present location.

He told Today that due to the close proximity of Fordzorku to Juapong, the district capital, it makes it unsuitable to site the market facility there since it had the potential to collapse the Juapong market.

Mr. Eleblu suggested that it was better to build the market complex at Aviyime or Battor, to serve communities in those areas and also take into consideration the number of people living in these towns and including Mepe.

However, the aspiring MP contended that if the assembly is still interested in constructing a market at Fordzorku, then it should consider putting up a mini-market.

He said the assembly could also look at a community like Huxikporkpe which has villages like Workpui, Agorbe, Hlukpor, Adexor, Dadome and Fupkbui around it and site the market complex there.

It pointed out that taking the market to Huxikporkpe with has dense population could attract huge patronage from the town and neighbouring villages.

He the villages would be saved from travelling long distances to attend market at Juapong or the Fordzorku.

According to Mr. Eleblu, the decision of the assembly and the government to site the new market at Fordzorku was creating tension between traditional authorities at Juapong and Forzdorku as well as among members of the respective communities.

However, Mr. Eleblu commended the government, the district assembly and the sitting MP, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa for making Volo, a town in the constituency, a beneficiary of the one of the 200 day senior High Schools being built by government as part of its 2012 campaign promise.


He said the residents of Volo and surrounding towns will benefit immensely from the school.

However, he wants the government to reconsider sitting the ultra modern market at Fordzorku saying he was not opposed to the project but only wanted to prevent a situation where the project would go waste after completion due to low patronage.

He said in view of the current economic conditions it was necessary that the scanty resources were put to judicious use for the benefit of the people.

Currently process is under way to clear the site earmarked for the market at Fordzorku.
