MP appeals to gov't to assist private schools

Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Mr. Justice Joe Appiah, has urged the government to support private schools especially at the basic level.

He said since private schools played a vital role in the development of the manpower needs of the country, it was imperative that government assisted them, particularly from the kindergarten to the junior high school levels.

The MP stated these in Accra during the Second Annual Graduation/Speech Day of the Brainy Academy at Odorkor in Accra.

Mr. Appiah said but for the crucial role private schools, it would have been very difficult for the government to build the needed infrastructure to educate all the children in the country, pay the subsidies for students and salaries of staff.

He said though government had a lot on its hands, it should still give some assistance to private schools.

Mr. Appiah said the support could be in the form of subsidized textbooks and exercise books and capacity building for teachers in the private schools.

The Proprietress of the school, Mrs. Mary Crabbe, said irregular payment of fees by parents was a major challenge in the administration of private schools.

She said the school which had a crèche department would admit pupils in primary class three this year and had plans to put up a library to encourage the pupils to read.
