MCE proposes return of faith-based schools to owners

Mr Samuel Oppong, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive, has proposed to the government the return of Mission Schools to their owners to reduce the huge national wage bills that had become a major headache to the country’s financial sector.

It will also help reduce moral decadence among school children.

Mr Oppong, who is also the Dean of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Central Region, said this to the press at Agona Swedru.

Mr Oppong said such a move would improve monitoring and supervision of schools especially at the basic level.

He said it was the responsibility of the MMDCEs to work in collaboration with the stakeholders in education to improve performance of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results.

The Dean called on the MMDCEs to strictly check teacher absenteeism, accommodation and supervision in public schools to enhance quality education.

He urged them to work hard to reduce maternal mortality in their various health facilities in the Region.

Mr Oppong urged the MMDCEs to take specific action to help the government to remove ghost names from the government payroll and prosecute offenders.

He stressed the need to explore specific ways to identify strategies with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ghana Export Promotion Council, Business Advisory Centers and Central Regional Development Commission (CEDECOM) to help create jobs and wealth for the unemployed youth.

Mr Oppong called on the Assemblies to intensify their Internal Generated Fund (IGF) to support the development agenda rather than relying on Common Fund.

The Dean assured Ghanaians that MMDCEs would continue to support the government to deliver in order to pursue the Better Ghana Agenda under President John Dramani Mahama.
