Labourer held for allegedly murdering his girlfriend

Wassa Afranse (W/R), Aug. 19, GNA - A 22-year-old farm labourer of Wassa Afranse in the Wassa Amenfi District, Kobina Coby, who allegedly shot his former girlfriend and later attempted to commit suicide, is helping the Wassa Akropong Police in their investigations.

According to a Police Spokesman, Cobby and the girlfriend, Ntiku had been friends for sometime but later broke off.

He said on the night of Saturday, August 9, Ntiku who was also a chorister at Wassa Afranse Catholic Church was returning home after attending choir practice at about 2130 hours when an unidentified person shot her.

She died instantly.

The spokesman said the assailant further used a club to hit the head of Ntiku.

He said about 0200 hours on Sunday Cobby arrived home bleeding profusely and told his wife that he had been shot by somebody at a spot near a carpenter's shop in the town and was, therefore, rushed to the Wassa Akropong hospital by his wife and brother-in-law. The spokesman said the doctor who examined Cobby said it was a stab from a knife and not a gunshot.

He said about 0600 hours the same day, Cobby's brother-in-law and other people in the town went to the spot near the carpenter's shop where Cobby claimed to have been shot but to their dismay, the body of Ntiku was found lying in a pool of blood and, therefore, reported the incident to the Police.

The Spokesman said when the Police arrived at the scene they found a locally made pistol and a club with bloodstains believed to have been used on the deceased.

Cobby, who is currently receiving treatment for his knife wound, has consistently denied being responsible for the murder of Ntiku, the Spokesman said.
