KMA to pull down unauthorised billboards today

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will today embark on a special operation to pull down all unauthorised and dilapidated billboards in the Kumasi Metropolis.

The exercise, which is hinted to bring sanity to the manner people put up billboards and posters within the Metropolis, has said it would be extended to include political party billboards which have been erected without permit, and those which can cause threat to human lives.

The KMA last week gave a one-week ultimatum to advertisers to repair their dilapidated billboards, which pose a danger to the public, especially after heavy rains.

The directive added that failure to heed to the order would lead to removal of all dilapidated billboards, posters and banners some which have been displayed in the city without permit.

The byelaws of the KMA enjoin advertisers to get a permit before erecting billboards, or mounting banners in any part of the city.

However, many people have defied this order to illegally mount banners and erect billboards particular at obscured areas which sometimes cause a lot of destruction to properties and even human lives when it rains heavily.

It is to address this increasing practice that the Assembly is embarking on this operation to ensure that people go through the appropriate channels to post or mount adverts and erect billboards in the Kumasi Metropolis.

Godwin Nyame, PRO of KMA indicates the exercise would be carried out until all illegal and dilapidated billboards are removed from the city.
