Juaso (Ash), Aug 23, GNA - The Asante-Akim South District Iodated Salt Committee has been tasked to promote the patronage and consumption of iodated salt in the district. It has also been tasked to institute measures to rid the district of the sale of non-iodated salt.

Dr Lord Justice Gyamfi-Fenteng, the District Chief Executive, also ordered the committee to bring to book dealers in non-iodated salt as a means of discouraging its consumption in the district. He was speaking at the maiden meeting of the Iodated Salt Committee at Juaso and charged the committee to educate the people on the need for them to use iodated salt.

The DCE urged traditional authorities, assembly members, school authorities and opinion leaders to play active roles in the propagation and promotion of the consumption of iodated salt. Dr Franklin Asiedu Bekoe, the District Director of Health Services, said in order to prevent diseases like goitre, polio and mental retardation in children, there was the need for people to adhere to the use of iodated salt.

Miss Antoinette Asamoah, the District Nutrition Officer, appealed to dealers in iodated salt to preserve the iodine contents by always covering them and avoid exposing them to the sun and air.
